The Settlements in Strandja - Balgari Village The Settlements in Strandja - Balgari Village
17 km to the south-west of Tzarevo is situated the village Balgari which is the only one in Strandja with the status of folklore reserve. It is located over a hill roundabout from deep gorges. It is supposed that the name of the village originated from the name of proto- Bulgarian tribe "Urgari" who had the task to protect the Bulgaria – Byzantium boundary. Here to the latest time the fire-dancing has survived, from here is the last "real" fire-dancer – the old woman Zlata, after the death of who the tradition has faded for many years.
Today’s this unique by its nature spectacular ritual has survived and could be watched at the fest of the village Balgari – 3rd and 4th of June. At that time the residents of the village honored the saints Constantine and Helena who are patron saints of the church in the village announced also as a monument of culture.

The Settlements in Strandja - Brodilovo Village The Settlements in Strandja - Brodilovo Village
Brodilovo village is located at 20 km to the south of the town Tzarevo at the most east part of the mountain. It is situated in the lovely valley of the river Veleka , at the ford of its left side (bank) , from where comes the name of this Strandja village. In the past Brodilovo was inhabited by Greeks who left fine-looking and authentic wooden houses well preserved till today. After the Balkan war here settled refugees from Eastern Thrace who were engaged mainly in agriculture and cattle-breeding. Brodilovo is one of the first villages
where the fire-dancing was practiced. It is no accident that some of the most famous fire-dancers are from here. Very unique is the proclaimed as a monument of architecture church "St. Pantaleimon", where could be seen remarkable Strandja
 woodcarvings.

The Settlements in Strandja - Kalovo Village The Settlements in Strandja - Kalovo Village
The Strandja village of Kalovo is located at 50 km to the west of the town of Tzarevo to the south of Bourgas. The name of the village has originated from the Greek word "kalos" that means "fine" in spite of the fact that the village always was Bulgarian one. In its neighborhood were discovered many dolmens and Thracian grave necropolises which clearly proof that at these places millenia has reigned one of the most ancient civilizations in the world – the Thracian. Unique aspect of this small Strandja village that has population of no more 40 people gave the old oaks which are found near by.

The Settlements in Strandja - Kosti Village The Settlements in Strandja - Kosti Village
The village of Costi is also situated in a picturesque valley of the river Veleka and it is 25 km to the southwest from the town of Tzarevo. Disputable are the hypothesizes concerning the origin of its name. Some sources consider that it comes from the fire-dancing holiday "St. St. Constantine and Helena" that is honored here but other thought it bears the name of the Greek wealthy man – Costakis. Probably the two versions are somewhat right because Costi is one of the most famous with the fire-dancing villages, where till today hereditary fire-dancers
are playing over growing embers during the fairs. Like the village of Brodilovo here also has lived Greek population till 1914 whose houses mould today its unique appearance. The church "St. St. Cyril and Metody " was ruined during the revival uprising and was restored again in 1909 an the most remarkable in it are the woodcarving iconostasis and many restored icons. It is declared also as a architectural monument. Across Costi was passing the old road from Malko Tarnovo to Vasiliko (nowadays Tzarevo) and Ahtopol that was with great economical and commercial significance.

Only 2 km to the west of the village Lozenec (at the Black sea coast) is situated the village of Velika which offers unique opportunity to have a holiday at the same time in the mountains and the seaside. The combination of sea and mountain climate is very healthy and the conditions for various kinds of tourism makes the holiday here interesting and varied. Very impressive is the botanical garden of the family Serafimovi.
