Bulgari village, famous for its annual celebration of Saint Constantine, on June 3, when Nestari dancers fast for 24 hours before going into trances and dancing on hot coals in the village square. Last year an estimated 6000 people crammed into the tiny village to witness the legendary event. In the village of Balgari the unique “nestinary” (firewalkers) rite can be seen . It takes place every year on St. Konstantin and Helena’s day (3rd June), considered to be patron and patroness of the nestinars. Miraculously, time has not much changed this intoxicating dance on live coals, which comes from ancient Thracian times.
